Bay Laurel: The Laurel is an evergreen shrub or tree with alternate, sharply lanceolate, short stemmed, wavy-edged leaves that are bright green in color and produce an aromatic scent caused by the essential oil bearing glands. It is well suited for shrubberies and hedges and as a tree for avenues in mild climates. Since some laurels are unisexual, male plants must be grown with female to obtain berries. The leaves of some laurels have been used to flavor food and medicine.
