Houston Llew Spiritiles: Delicacy

Houston Llew Spiritiles

“Be a cupcake in a world full of muffins.” —Unknown

Every Spiritile has its own story that inspires, uplifts, and brings a hopeful connection to life. Handcrafted in Atlanta, each is made with finely ground colored glass that is handpainted, fused to copper in a kiln at 1500 degrees, and then wrapped around a wooden frame (see more here). Spiritiles can be hung on the wall or displayed freestanding, and withstand direct sun, humidity, and even outdoor conditions. Care and hanging information here.

Artist Statement About This Piece: A little secret: Houston’s favorite type of cake is cupcake! With his birthday in October, fall becomes the season of cupcakes. One year, he received a GIANT cupcake-cake at the studio for his birthday, but most years he gets boxes of different delicious flavors. Such a dedication to cake in miniature expresses his artistic zeal: that in a world where muffins abound, the artist steps up and says, “How about cupcakes instead?”
